Composting
Would you like to learn more about backyard composting? Do you have a garden that could benefit from a healthy dose of compost? Visit Stop Waste's website to find out more information about how you and your neighbors can begin backyard food scraps composting, and even purchase compost bins at a reduced cost.
City Slicker Farms, the decentralized backyard garden project in West Oakland, also makes use of backyard compost: "Our sustainable farming practices depend on decomposed plant and food wastes for fertilizer. We recycle local wastes such as wood chips and sawdust, restaurant and home kitchen scraps, garden clippings, and animal manure to create high-quality compost for use at our farms and for residents." For more information about City Slicker's projects, visit the website or call (510) 762-4241.
City of Oakland's Green Cart is one of the city's efforts to reduce the amount of waste that is generated. The green cart collects yard trimmings, food scraps and food soiled paper. One of the great things about having a city green cart is that because of large scale composting facilities-it can break down some materials faster than our backyard compost bins. So if you have extra green 'wastes' that are hard to break down, the city is more than willing to take it! For more information about the Green Cart click on the link above.
