DIRECTOR - Edible Schoolyard Berkeley program of the Chez Panisse Foundation

Position Description
The ESY Berkeley (ESYB) Director (hereafter, the "Director") is responsible for the leadership, development, and management of the ESYB program. (S)he manages a staff of 10-12 people and works closely with the Chez Panisse Foundation (CPF), where some aspects of ESYB's administrative work are handled, including accounts payable and human resources. (S)he serves as the public face and chief representative of ESYB to the media and at conferences and other events. (S)he also assists with fundraising, and ensures integration of academics into ESYB. The Director reports to the ESY Programs Director.

Roles and Responsibilities

Staff Management

  • Manage all ESYB staff, interns, and AmeriCorps members including conducting employee reviews, and working with CPF to: update job descriptions and human resource materials, hire staff, and assign program responsibilities
  • Manage volunteers including recruitment, orientation, scheduling, and files
  • Manage office systems including, but not limited to: phones, computers, information requests, filing, scheduling, and supplies
  • Coordinate weekly ESYB staff meetings and monthly ESYB/CPF staff meetings

Program Development & Management

  • Substitute for garden/kitchen teachers as needed
  • Develop materials that integrate the principles of Edible Education into core academic subjects
  • Work in collaboration with ESYB and MLK staff on the integration of academics into the ESYB program curriculum
  • Work with CPF and ESYB staff to identify and produce program replication tools for distribution to a national audience

Outreach and Community/School Relations

  • Manage and implement garden/kitchen class schedule in tandem with MLK staff
  • Act as liaison and facilitate communications between MLK, ESYB, and CPF staff
  • Coordinate and lead monthly public tours
  • Manage and coordinate events and activities, as well as outreach materials, pertaining to: annual plant sale, special classes, summer program, community events, public offerings, and volunteer work days

Communications

  • Maintain ESYB website and communications in collaboration with CPF staff
  • Represent ESYB at conferences and workshops
  • Communicate with neighbors and the wider school community regarding any concerns or inquiries about ESYB
  • Collaborate with CPF staff on media interviews and special tours
  • Create public relations and outreach materials

Fundraising and Finance

  • Collaborate with CPF on fundraising, including but not limited to grant writing, event planning, and donor cultivation
  • Develop and manage ESYB program budget annually and review with CPF quarterly

Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal, written, and social communication skills
  • Strong working understanding of the public school system and experience with
  • curriculum, and lesson plan development and implementation
  • Teaching credential preferred
  • Demonstrated success in non-profit and staff management
  • Experience in fundraising
  • Sincere passion for work in environmental education and Edible Education
  • Strong collaborative expertise
  • Demonstrated creative problem solving skills
  • Honesty, integrity, and humility
  • Ability to work and multi-task within a highly diverse public school environment

PROGRAM ASSISTANT - City Slicker Farms

City Slicker Farms was founded in 2001 with the mission to empower West Oakland community members to meet the immediate and basic need for healthy organic food for themselves and their families by creating high-yield urban farms and backyard gardens.  The Program Assistant helps the organization fulfill its mission by assisting the Executive Director and staff in coordinating administrative duties.  This is a great position for motivated, detail-oriented people who are interested in all aspects of community food security and food justice.

 The Program Assistant will:

  • Coordinate School and Community Group Farm Tours with field staff                                           
  • Coordinate publications with staff and volunteers (West Oakland Healthy Eating Guide and Annual Reports)                                                    
  • Source farming and office materials with staff and volunteers                                                  
  • Advertise volunteer opportunities and intern positions                                                   
  • Coordinate hiring of interns and supervise administrative interns                           
  • Create & update documents                                                                                        
  • Field phone & e-mail inquiries                                                                                     
  • Coordinate data collection                                                                                                              
  • Conduct data entry for program recordkeeping and maintain databases                     
  • Analyze and report on data for evaluation purposes                                                    
  • Maintain filing systems                                                                                                                 
  • Send thank you letters to donors and grantors and maintain donor database     
  • Assist the Executive Director with packaging and mailing of funding requests                      
  • Coordinate copying and printing of office forms, brochures and applications                  
  • Maintain office equipment, conduct computer backups, and be the liaison with IT volunteers  
  • Assist the Executive Director with materials for monthly Board Meetings                                      
  • Provide backup for Apprentices, including leading tours and directing volunteer groups on occasion       
  • Maintain communication systems (web, newsletter, social networking sites
  • Participate in outreach events, including tabling                                                                              
  • Compile and distribute weekly staff meeting minutes

Qualifications:

  • Computer skills: Microsoft Office, Google documents and calendars, internet, databases (Salesforce a plus), web maintenance (ex. Word Press or Blogger)
  • Organizational & communication skills (data entry, planning, filing, managing schedules, e-mail, etc)
  • Comfortable working with a diverse group of people (age, race, gender, ethnicity, economic status)             
  • Comfortable coordinating, collaborating with and supervising volunteer workers                       
  • Very strong attention to detail and follow-through                                                                      
  • Ability to track multiple projects successfully at one time                                                        
  • Spanish language fluency a plus                                                                                      
  • We will prioritize applicants who demonstrate enthusiasm and interest in urban farming and food justice

Work Schedule & Benefits:

  • 35-40 hours per week Tuesday – Saturday (Monday to Friday is negotiable)
  • Two weeks paid vacation in December plus two weeks paid vacation and paid holidays   
  • Compensation negotiable based on skills.  Please submit your salary requests with your cover letter and resume.                               
  • We will prioritize applicants who demonstrate their commitment to holding the position for at least one year, however the position is at-will employment.

INTERNSHIPS - Phat Beets Produce

Phat Beets Produce was started in North Oakland in 2007 as a guerilla produce stand in a North Oakland park.  Phat beets now facilitates two certified, clinic based farmers’ markets, one youth led school farm stand and community nutrition hub, and a youth market garden in partnership with a local hospital obesity prevention program. People's Grocery is a community-based organization in West Oakland that develops creative solutions to the health problems in our community that stem from a lack of access to and knowledge about healthy, fresh foods. Our mission is to build a local food system that improves the health and economy of the West Oakland community.

Position Summary:
People’s Grocery seeks a Development Director to lead grant and donor fundraising for a $600,000 budget and lead a team of 2-3 staff and interns, working closely with the Executive Director.  This is a full-time senior staff position and reports directly to People’s Grocery Executive Director.  Position open until filled and starts immediately.
