Food First

The Institute for Food and Development Policy (Food First) works to eliminate the injustices that cause hunger by analyzing the root causes of global hunger, poverty and environmental degradation and by participating in movements for social change.

Food First is incubating the OFPC. Food First raised the OFPC's first-year budget and provides office space and administrative support. Food First is also advising and supporting the OFPC Coordinator on all aspects of the new food policy council's development and launch.

HOPE Collaborative

The goal of the HOPE Collaborative is to change the food and fitness environments in Oakland to provide more affordable, nutritious and local food, safe areas for physical activity, and stronger local economies for residents of vulnerable neighborhoods.

The HOPE Collaborative is the OFPC's main partner. The HOPE Steering Committee acts as an advisory board for the OFPC, and HOPE and OFPC will be working together very closely on policy strategies for transforming the Oakland food system.

Alameda County Public Health Department

The mission of the Alameda County Public Health Department is to work in partnership with the community to ensure the optimal health and well being of all people through a dynamic and responsive process respecting the diversity of the community and challenging us to provide for present and future generations.

Public Health Law & Policy

Public Health Law & Policy (PHLP) partners with advocates and decision-makers to help create healthier communities, including healthier food systems. PHLP provides in-depth research and analysis on legal and policy questions, and translates complex information into practical tools such as fact sheets, toolkits, and model policies.

City Slicker Farms

City Slicker Farms improves the food self-sufficiency of West Oakland through urban farming and back-yard gardens. City Slicker Farms addresses environmental racism and injustice by empowering residents and by providing access to local food in addition to services that allow people to grow their own nutritious food.

City Slicker Farms was a key partner in creating the Oakland Food Policy Council. City Slicker Farms assisted the Mayor’s Office in drafting the resolution to create the Council, and led the efforts to organize the campaign to pass the legislation, bringing the voices of our community participants to City Hall. City Slicker Farms will work closely with OFPC to help Oakland rise to the forefront of the sustainable cities movement and focus key resources on building a just food system for the future.

People's Grocery

People's Grocery promotes food justice by creating a local food system to improve the health and economy of West Oakland. People's Grocery uses innovative approaches to provide fresh local food, nutrition education, and jobs for West Oakland residents.

Physicians for Social Responsibility, San Francisco Bay Chapter

Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) is a nonprofit educational organization of concerned citizens and health professionals. PSR advocates for public policy designed to protect humans against health threats from nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, environmental degradation, and gun violence.

PUEBLO

People United for a Better Life in Oakland (PUEBLO) is a community membership organization that focuses on grassroots organizing, leadership training, popular education, and policy reform to improve the lives of the multi-ethnic low-income residents of Oakland.


Meet the OFPC's newest partner: APPEAL

APPEAL (Asia Pacific Partners for Empowerment, Advocacy and Leadership) is a national network of individuals and organizations working for social justice and the eradication of tobacco in the Asian/Pacific Islander community. Their model is based on building leadership and community based movements to support greater public health in the AAPI community. APPEAL is now expanding their focus to include obesity and food security.
